OpenCode 2.0 unifies its service and composes tools in code

Feature release / rollout

OpenCode 2.0 makes its client-server architecture the default. Terminal, web and desktop interfaces talk to one local background process. Programmatic clients can discover it automatically, and the release exposes a redesigned API.

Code Mode turns MCP and OpenAPI operations into functions that can be composed in small scripts, processing multiple results before returning them to the model. The release adds background subagents and shell commands, stabilizes TUI plugins and provides @opencode/client. The @opencode/sdk package embeds the same engine but remains in development.

This is a major migration: 1.0 plugins are incompatible and the server API is completely different. The announcement points to migration guidance. Performance and orchestration benefits have not been independently tested here.

The agent becomes a service controlled by several interfaces rather than a process tied to one terminal.
